James Arthur Martie

James Arthur Martie, 89, of Dowell, passed away at 10:30 P.M., Sunday, April 14, 2002 at his home.
Arthur was a retired coal miner working for 43 years at Consolidated Coal Co. He attended the Dowell Baptist Church, He was a member and had served as master on three separate occasions of Masonic Lodge #234 of Du Quoin. He was a member and had been High Priest of Royal Arch Masons Du Quoin Chapter # 44. He was a member of the UMWofA. Arthur was a former Elkville Highschool board member and a former Village of Dowell Trustee.
He was born September 7, 1912 at Hallidayboro, IL the son of John Jacob and Edith (Kelley) Martie.
He married Lulu Hargett on December 19, 1936 at Elkville, IL she passed away in April 1980.
He is survived by two sons- Chuck Martie and wife Judy of Dowell, Edward Martie and wife Toni of Du Quoin, daughter- Shirley Martie of Dowell, sister-in-law- Nettie Martie of Hallidayboro, brother-in-law- Church Hargett and wife Mary of Du Quoin, eight grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, one sister, one great grandchild.
Funeral services were at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Gary Pate officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.
Masonic services were at 7:00 P.M., Tuesday at the funeral home.
Friends may make memorials to the Dowell Baptist Church or the Du Quoin Masonic Lodge #234 and will be accepted at the funeral home.
